From Hungary to the UK: My Journey from Freelance Designer to Business Owner and Care Professional - A Story of Creativity, Resilience, and Adaptation

A Journey Worth Sharing

Every journey is unique, and mine began in Hungary during a time of hope and boundless dreams. In 2008, I took a leap of faith and moved to the bustling streets of the UK, carrying a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. This blog post shares the story of my evolution – from freelance logo designer to building a textile business, and blending my creative passions with a meaningful caring career as a single mother. I hope my experiences offer inspiration and connection to those forging their own paths.

The Early Days: Moving to the UK

Moving to the UK was both exciting and nerve-wracking. I was enthusiastic and after a few years here I started working as a freelancer and spent a year designing logos and brand identities for clients across a range of industries. The freedom of freelancing was exciting, but juggling multiple projects was often overwhelming.

I eventually found myself in a management role that required a significant amount of time and dedication. While it seemed like a natural progression, my passion for design began to wane and my life took a different direction.

Embracing Entrepreneurship: Starting My Own Business

In 2015, my daughter Lilly was born—a life-changing moment that brought immense joy. The following year, in November 2016, I took another exciting step by launching my own fabric business. Starting online, the venture was a fusion of my love for design and entrepreneurial spirit. By 2019, I had opened my own shop, and within a few years, I was proudly serving customers in over 20 countries. My business thrived for seven remarkable years, offering not only beautiful fabrics but also showcasing unique designs that embodied my artistic vision.

One of the most memorable milestones was opening my shop in Ipswich in 2019—a year that proved both transformative and challenging, as I also became a single mum. My shop rekindled my creative energy and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the vibrant world of colours and patterns. I spent countless hours experimenting with designs, turning the dream of printing my own bespoke patterns onto fabric into reality. These creations struck a chord with textile enthusiasts, earning a loyal following and driving annual sales growth by nearly 30%. It was a deeply fulfilling chapter filled with creativity and connection.

Navigating Challenges: The Impact of Brexit

However, my entrepreneurial journey has not been without its challenges. The aftermath of Brexit introduced new trade regulations that severely impacted my business. As I struggled to import materials and fulfill orders, I made the heartbreaking decision to close my textile shop. It was a challenging time, filled with uncertainty, yet I understood that adaptability is vital to survival. Every transition is an opportunity for renewal and reinvention. It was a time to adapt to the new situation and find new paths.

Despite these setbacks, my love for design only deepened. This challenging moment taught me that creativity is not limited to a single medium or form. It is a powerful tool that can adapt and evolve.

A New Chapter: Balancing Design and Care

Fast forward to 2024, I made a significant choice to explore new horizons. Alongside my role as a care professional, I started my design business. Juggling these dual responsibilities pushed me in unexpected directions. In my care profession, I engaged with individuals on a profound level, uplifting their spirits and tending to their unique needs. This experience enriched my design work too, guiding me to create designs with compassion and purpose.

The Heart of My Journey: Lessons Learned

My journey has imparted invaluable lessons about resilience and the importance of creativity. I once felt confined to a single identity, believing I could only be a designer or a manager. Embracing change revealed my capacity to wear multiple hats and thrive in all of them.

From my freelance beginnings to launching a fabric business, I learned to navigate a landscape filled with opportunities and challenges. Each experience shaped my perspective, allowing me to unite my passions with practicality.

My Passion Today

In this new chapter of my life, I invite you to join me as I explore innovative design paths. With fresh insights and a wealth of experience, I strive to create designs that resonate with others. My work goes beyond mere aesthetics; it tells stories and fosters connections, reflecting the collective experiences that connect us.

I encourage everyone reading this to embrace their creativity, no matter where their path leads. While the road may not always be smooth, there are valuable lessons to be learned at every turn. Stay adaptable and true to yourself as you pursue your passions.

Reflecting on the Undertones of My Journey

Looking back on my migration from Hungary to the UK, I've learned that creativity transcends borders. It connects people across cultures and experiences. Whether you are freelancing, managing a business, or exploring entirely different fields, honouring your creative spirit is vital.

As I embark on this next chapter, I am eager to see how my creativity unfolds. May my story of resilience and growth inspire you to explore your unique journey. Stay curious, nurture your creativity, and embrace the unexpected paths that life presents.

Whether designing textiles or creating safe spaces for others, my life's journey highlights our capacity to adapt and have courage. Each step moulds our story, leaving lasting impressions on the canvas of our lives.

Every great journey begins with a single step, and each step forward brings you closer to your dream. Progress might seem small at times, but with perseverance and belief, every stride matters in shaping your path to success. Keep moving forward, one step at a time. Love: Lilly and Noemi
